In Kaidan’s Defence (and VS in general)…
You know, I don’t know about all of you but something I am getting quite fed up with all that VS bashing, Horizon complaining and problems with Garrus cheating line.
It just somethimes it feels like, people don’t even try to understand Kaidan´s reason - why he acts the way he acts. They consider him whiny (when he never even mentioned his headaches, it was Chakwas who did and after Shepard asked), boring and Horizon annoying (just imagine if he was Alien). And I always wondered why – he had all the reasons working in his defence. And to say he is not trustworthy? Why?
In ME universe you basically buy loyalty of your squadmates – Garrus with his Maelon problem, Wrew and family armour, Tali and geth data. Don’t even get me started on ME2. You had to gain Garrus and Tali´s loyalty again. And look at VS – those two are only Alliance soldiers in your squad, and they dont have loyalty mission. They don’t need loyalty missions because their trust comes from the same training as Shepard had – their trust you as Marine, they trust their commander.
But then Shepard dies, and some time later turns out to be alive, works with terrorists and never even informs Kaidan that she is alive. For me this was a great indicator for a VS to stop trusting Shepard. They had their right to question Shepard, because this is how they lost their trust in Shepardś actiona. Because Shepard really betrayed everything he/she worked for. So then in ME3 – Kaidan in still troubled. Sheaprd is in jail for wiping out whole star system, with whole Alliance trying to prosecute her (not the first time they wanted to do it either). And then Mars happens and there is Shepard, who worked with Cerberus and Cerberus is now trying to sabotage whole mission. It rather logical to wonder about this. I always thought they got rather short straw in ME. First you had to kill one of them.
And were used a puppet in Shepard and Udina conflict. This is their loyalty misson – something they need to gain 100% trust in Shepard again. If Shepard was good to them – Kaidan turns his gun on Udina – his own employer and shoots him (I actually I like this more that Shepard killing Udina.). If you were bad to VS, and never tried to understand his reasons, he has no right to trust you – you never gave him reason to do so. So Shepard is forced to shoot him. After that he never question you again. Because Shepard just gained his trust.
And that’s why I think Kaidan/Ash story line is rather amazing and for me more satisfying than anyone else.
To the cheating with Garrus. No offence to Garrus fans, I love the guy, but in my mind he works better as Shepard best friend. I did romance him, but I felt that his romance was rather OTN (as everything in ME2 was rather dumbed down, all flirting reduced to lines like - I want you thane) and for me it felt too forced. Like:
Shep: Hey Garrus wanna have sex?
G: Sure Shepard let me watch some human/turian porn and figure out what do to.
I kind of like him more with Tali than Shepard (at least they can drink the same wine).
So if Shepard romances Garrus. Garrus disappeared in a same time as Shepard did (or died). And suddenly he is there with Shepard - and he is most possibly part of your Horizon squad (For example I take him everywhere) and later Garrus starts relations with the Shepard. Highly suspicious, if you ask me. So yes that can be considered cheating. Kaidan spent 3 years waiting for Shepard, mourning her death and all he earned from his former LI is – stop complaining you twat, I am with Garrus now and I don’t care about you…
I remember his reaction when he saw Garrus on Horizon. He was like: You too Garrus? AS IF he felt betrayed by the fact that Garrus knew Shepard was alive and never bothered to tell him. Especially, if you romanced him in the first game. Just imagine what would Shepard do if Kaidan or Ash did this to. I am sure Sheprard would smack their head on nearest crate…
Yep thats how it goes.
Here have a nice Kaidan screenshot to apologize for my rant.
